Walls & 4 Cases: Photography
by Thomas Drake
It all began around 1948 when my father let me use his old Kodak folding
camera. Two years later I entered the darkroom for the first time ... and I
remained in the darkroom until 2000 or so.
I have had a
succession of cameras since 1948: a 35mm Buccaneer (made in North Adams, Mass.);
a 2¼ x 3¼ Anniversary Speed Graphic; a pre-WW2 Contax; a Leica; a Rollei; a 4x5
Speed Graphic; a 35mm Olympus ... and some others in-between.
Nowadays I use
a digital Canon EOS 2OD. Also, I much prefer Adobe’s Photoshop and Lightroom
computer programs to the smelly, old darkroom! All the prints on display were
made using either an Epson 2200 or, more recently, an Epson R2880 printer. Both
printers use pigment-base inks which, when combined with quality papers, assures
the collector that the prints will last around a century!
Recently a
close artist-friend told me that he views me more as a technician than as an
artist. That may be true since a great deal of technical expertise is required
to produce a quality print. As to the artist-within-me, well, you be the judge
of that.
Bottom line: I
do hope that you enjoy looking at my prints as much as I enjoyed making them!
